What will i defend ?

I am Su En Hao ^^.

Q1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
Q2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.

Q1.i would protect my parents, my grandparents and my siblings as they are the ones that are the more important ones. we can only rely on our family members to help us solve our problems. think about our friends. would they be bothered to hep us when we are in need or just leave us alone? friends are just your play partner. they will not really help you when u are in need. the real people that will help you is your family members.

Q2. my three aspects are family, friends and facebook. i choose family as they are the ones that help me solve my problems at home. friends because they are the ones that bring joy to us outside the world and friends face the world together weather in studies or play. i choose face book because it is the ones that keep old friends in contact with each other. for example: after the P6 PSLE, we lost contact with each other and facebook got us united again.

Q1) Something that i would defend anytime is my family. They have always supported me throughout the years of my life. Although siblings may quarrel sometimes, we actually support each other behind each others backs. Also, my parents have always encouraged me for everything i did and have provided me shelter.

Q2)Those 3 aspects will be my family, my friends and my country. My family has provided me with many necessities and shelter for my whole life. my friends back me up whenever i am in trouble or i need help, also they share or or pain with me always. My country has also allowed me to study in a good environment.

Reply to Wei Liang

I also agree that friends share pain or joy woith each other and watch each others back, not to backstab them in the face.

E-learning Assignment.

1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
I would definitely choose to protect and defend my family in times of threat or crisis without thinking. Simply because of this saying which goes, "Blood is thicker than water." My family is the reason why I am still living in this world. They are willing to work extra hard just to satisfy my needs and wants and also to give me a better life. They are the reason why I am in school rather than in the streets begging for money. They are the people who pack my parachute and give me education for my future. They are the ones who give me shelter during the rain. Even if I need to sacrifice my life just to save them, I am willing to. They are the ones who cheered me to stand on my feet after falling off my bicycle. They are the ones who are always with me when I am unhappy or sad. They would spend time to think of ways to make me smile or laugh. Despite giving them countless of disappointment, my family is always forgiving and they will still trust me. They are the ones who always support me on doing what I feel is right. They are the ones that taught me how to different-shape what is right and wrong. They are the ones who experience hardship and pain with me throughout the 14 years I lived with them. They are the ones who took leave from their job to take care of me when I am ill, even though they know they might get sacked by their superior during the recession. But I am not protecting and defending my family just because of these reasons I told you. I am protecting and defending them because they are the ones I love and dear most.
2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.
The three different aspects that are important to me is my Family, Friends and finally, my Country.
Family is important to me because they are willing to give me hundred percent support in whatever I do. They taught us life-long lessons that will be useful to us in the future. They did so much things, that we cannot repay them back in any way, even money. My friends because they are the people who I can trust in the business world. There is a chinese saying which goes, " At home, we can rely on our parents. Out in the business world, we can only rely on our friends." I think this phrase is very meaningful as it is true. We cannot trust or tell a secret to an outsider, a person you do not know. I would trust my friends rather than someone I just knew. Friends are people who spend hardship and difficult times together with you, so after all those experiences, there will be a bond between my friends and myself, which make me trust them. Country because Singapore is one of the safest country in the world. It is not because it is small, so it is the safest. It is because everyone in Singapore played a part to be vigilant , to make Singapore a better place. If there is a war in Singapore, I would of course serve my country in protecting it. I will do my best to kill as many enemies before I die. I will do my country proud!

Reply to Kelwin:
I agree with you Kelwin. To protect our country, everyone has a part to play. If there is no us, how can there be Singapore? Lets strive our very best to let Singapore be a crime-free country!
Kelwin here, (26)

In a situation that requires me to defend something, I would choose the 3 Fs, which is Family, Friends and Fellow Countrymen. the reason that I had placed my family first is because they will be the first one to help me if I get myself into trouble. My family is also always tehre and if not for them, I would not be what I am today.

Next is friends. friends are important, everyone knows that. The reason for choosing to defend them is simple. They themselves will be the first few to defend me should anything happen. They are the ones that could be relied on if I am in trouble. My friends also had stood with me during my darkest mood and shared the joy when I have good news. That is why I choose to defend them.

My fellow countrymen. If not without them, there would be no Singapore. They contributed largely to Singapore's growth and have every rights to be defended. The reason to defend them is simple, they have moulded this great country and home for me to live in and will defend it should there be any threats. That is why I have chosen to protect them in times of crisis as they would have with me.

What will you defend?

Ekaphat Mathiprechakul (8)

Q1) In times of threat or crisis, I would definitely choose to defend and protect my friends and family members. Firstly, my parents were the ones who took lots of effort to bring me up in this very world. They sacrificed lots of time and money too, by giving me a proper education, providing me with at least 3 meals a day, my daily necessities etc. Despite the many setbacks and challenges that I faced during entire life time, my friends, family and loved ones were always the ones that stood by me and never lost hope in whatever I did. If I ever did something wrong, my parents would not punish me harshly, they would just use words to enlighten me on the consequences. So without the existence of them, I'll say that I would not have made it this far and I may not have even existed in this very world.

Q2)For the above question, my three different aspects would be friends, family and country. Firstly, whenever I am overseas studying or out on a holiday without my parents by my side, my friends would always be there to support me to thrive for success in everything that I do. Similarly, when I am in Singapore with my parents by my side, they would be there to shower me with love and concern in every single way that they can. As for my country, without the advanced technology and good education that they have provided for all Singaporeans, we would not have been able to make a name for Singapore in different ways like in sports, studies. economy etc. We would also not be able to achieve what in life without the help of our country. We are "One Nation, One Singapore". So, "We ourselves must defend Singapore" for we would be the only ones who are able to do that.

Reply to Jerome's post.
I have to agree with jerome on what he has said on family. They are our pillar of support at home. Without them, we would have collapsed a very long time ago. So we must cherish them in whatever way we still can as they are all not young anymore. We cannot just neglect them if they are unable to give us things that we want as they have our interests at heart. They have experienced many things that we have not and they would know what is good and bad for us.

2I 28 Greg Tan Boon Kit: What will you defend?

This Is Greg Here, there are two questions i am here to answer today.

1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?

To say the truth, my grandparents have been taking care of me ever since I was just an infant, my mum provides me with all of my study and social needs. My uncle, auntie and cousin have been taking care of me and also dotes on me a lot. I will surely defend my family members in times of threat or crisis. I do not mind sacrificing my life to save theirs as I know that they will also do the same for me and that we are all in a same family.

2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.

My three different aspects are actually love, care and support. My family lacks none of these and we instead have lots of it! Love in my family means that we treasure each other and are always there for each other. Care in my family means we actually help each other in many ways, be it social or emotional. Support in my family means that we care and show our concern to each other.

I agree that family and friends are very important in our lives. I am glad that i have such a good friend as you as just from your post, i can tell that you and your parents are actually very loving. I am envious that you have grown up in such a loving family. Zhi Khong I have a question to ask, if one day you know that a crisis is coming, will you leave with your family or stay to defend Singapore?
I am Tan Wei Liang from 2I reg number 32

Q1)
I will strive to protect and defend my parents in times of threat or crisis. The reason is very simple. They have shown me concern and encourage me in everything I do. Without them I will not be in this world too. They are the ones who help when I am in trouble.

Q2)
The three aspects will be my family, my friends and my country. My family always provide me a comfortable shelter to live in and always believe in me. My friends are also important because they always share the joy with me by having fun together. They will also tried their best to help if I am in trouble. Lastly, my country provide me a good environment to live in by keeping it a clean and green place.

Reply to Chen Xi
I agree that we had to protect our family as they had provide us with lots of things in life. In fact, they are part of our life. Family also always help us when we are in trouble, so we had to protect them when they are in trouble too.

What will you defend?

Q1) What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
I will protect my family, friends and those who are not fit enough to fight for themselves. My family is the ones who raise me into a fine boy without any worries about shelter, food and love while my friends are the ones who help me through crisis over and over again in my life. Without my family and my friends, i do not think that i could survive. I had experienced love, care and help from them. If there are any things i could be of help, i would not hesitate at all. Since they were the ones who made my life wonderful, i do not want to see them in distress or in deep trouble.

Q2) For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.
The three main aspects are love, care and kindness. Love and care are what i got from my families and friends. I know very well that i am blessed to be loved and cared of and everyone wants to be treated that way. The third aspect, kindness. Although everyone wants to be treated the same way that i was treated, not many people had the same thing as me. Nothing is fair in this world and not everyone will be treated the same way. Therefore, I wanted to help and defend those who are helpless and try my best to make them feel that they were cared and loved too. This kindness part includes my country, unfortunate people in poor and undeveloped countries. If i want to be loved and cared, i have to love and care about others in return.

Response to Chen Xi's post:
I agreed with you for all the things that parents had been able to provide us with from the day we were borned. Thats why we all should be satisfied and appreciate with what we have now. I admire you that your family and you actually do everything together and no one was left out. I think that cohesion is very important as the idea of unity is strength truly is the best defense a country or a family can have. However, what if your family and friends are also in crisis and you are the only one who can help them. Will you protect them with your life on the line?

What he wrote:
A1. I am Khoo Ye Rong, 16, I may have a different perspective from others. To me, I will defend anything and anyone I can. If you were to ask which one has the top priority, I did say friends. The reason why I did not put family as first is because I know my parents have the ability and are strong to protect themselves. If not, they would not have been able to raise me up till who I am now.

A2. My friends are the dearest to me. Be it academic or gaming, they have always been there. One person that always help me academically is Aron Chen from secondary 2I. Without him, I bet a lot of my homework will be undone. Shu Han and Feng Ming who can be annoying at times have always been good friends with me since the start of the year. I play with them and study with them. When I am in trouble, these three person always never fail to be there for me. These are the reasons why I chose to protect and defend my friends. Maybe if they are brave and courageous enough, they could follow me into war. I know it is silly, but I will volunteer to be in the Singapore Armed Forces and fight for Singapore, for this small island is my homeland. Without it, I will not even be able to meet these friends. Without them, they will never be me.

P.S. [Well, this might seem way far from my actual post, but well, there weren't many posts to comment about so I did a random pick and it's starting to get late. Sorry. :) ]

A1) I have to disagree with you when you said your parents are old and strong enough to protect themselves from any harm. Well, I'm sure they certainly aren't young anymore, so maybe they've grown somewhat weaker in a way. Furthermore, if something bad happens at home, who is in the house with you? It might be your friends (if they are invited) but your parents are most likely there with you. Your parents painstakingly raised you to what you are today, blessed with a fit body and almost immune to most diseases, and I suppose your friends didn't raise you up?
A2) Well, I guess what you said about your friends being a great help to you makes me feel a little jealous somehow. :) I'm sorry if my first response may sound harsh. Right, your friends are most likely with you more than your parents if you go out them frequently (unlike me, I'm somewhat a loner). It's nice to hear you would fight for Singapore if a war breaks out here, even if it is not the most perfect place to be living in. Nothing is perfect though. Most people will flee when they hear of a war breaking out soon.

What will you defend

Question 1
I will strive to protect and defend my family during threat or crisis. My family consist of my parents, a elder brother, my younger sister and me. Throughout my 14 years, my family provided me a comfort shelter to grow. When I am not happy, they will cheer me up and help me to resolve the problem such as my result is not up to expectation, during this time, they will encourage me to try harder the next time. We share happiness together. Without my family, I would not lead a good life like this.
Question 2
The first aspect is love. Everyone at home treasure each other. We cherish the moment we spend together. When any family member is sick, we take turn to take care of them.
The second aspect is support. My family give me financial and moral support. My parent will make sure that I have enough money to spend. When I am sad, my family will cheer me up and help me to look for solution.
The third aspect is cohesion. When there are problems or crisis at home, we will face it together and solve it together. We will not abandon any one during crisis.

I agree that family, country and friends are important. Without country, there is no way for us to settle down in a family. Without family, there will be no warmth. Without friends, there will be no joy.

Response to Ye Rong's post:

1. I agree with your views. Parents are definitely capable of all things, including defending, protecting themselves and surviving if they were able to raise us up. Friends on the other hand, might need more support, emotionally and physically wise.

2. I see that you've the same sentiments as me. Protecting friends who are always there for you is a wise choice. And the phrases "for this small island is my homeland. Without it, I will not even be able to meet these friends. Without them, they will never be me." is a well spoken truth.
1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?

I am Ng Jun Yi, 22. From what I've observed, I guess I'm one of the few in my class that will have this response: I hold most dear in my life; friends. But only a selective few would I strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis. Not that my family isn't important, its just that I'm convinced of their own ability to survive. Therefore, I prize my friends above all.

2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.

I prize my friends above all because they show me care and concern. Especially when I'm feeling down. It is thanks to them I'm able to overcome several obstacles in life. Secondly, they also share with me times of laughter, fun, and enjoyment. It is always them who are able to make me laugh, smile, or cry. Without them, I don't think I would be able to experience these many human emotions. In fact, they are one of the main reasons I choose to live. Without them, I would feel as though part of me has been destroyed. Thirdly, they are willing to give voluntarily without receiving. Or returning, for that matter. I'm very grateful for that aspect of them. These are the reasons I think so highly of my friends.

Q1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
Q2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.

answer to question 1
I would protect my family. I will protect them as they have always encourage and support me in whatever i do. They are also the ones that raise me up so no matter what happen, i will always watch over and protect them

answer to question 2
The three aspects are my family, my friends and my homeland. All of them are equally important to me. I wil protect my family as they always encouage me and whenever i need help, they will always be the first to lend me a helping hand. I will also protect my friends as they are important to me and always share their joy with me. Lastly, i will protect my homeland, singapore. It is my birthplace and i will help protect no matter what happens.

What will you defend?

Q1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
For me, i would defend my family. When i was young it was my parents that protect me, raise me up. Now, it should be my turn to protect them. Also, family members are the ones that will always be with you. They are people who you could share your feelings with without any complains at all.

Q2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.
If there are three more aspects to include, i would say one of them would be my friends. They are the ones who you would have fun with. When you need help, friends would always be there to help you and guide you along. If you are in trouble, they would also do their best to help you. I would also defend my country. It is where i was born and i will do my best to defend it. It is where i grow and learn things. It is where all my friends and family members are and where they live too. There are lots of memories here. The other thing i would protect would be myself. If anything happens to me, my families and friends would be sad for me. i do not wish for them to be sad. If i protect myself, i could protect those i want to protect and try my best to make sure they are safe.

Reply to Yerong's post

I don't quite agree with you that you would help your friends first instead of your parents. Although your parents might have the ability to raise you up against all odds, they might not have the ability to protect themselves during a war.

For your second post, I agree to your statement "Without it, I will not even be able to meet these friends. Without them, they will never be me." Friends are always there to help one another. If everyone were to be strangers, then the world would be in despair as they have no one to turn to for help.

Thank you.

As for your second post, I also agree with it as all of your stated aspects are important because they provide you with many wonderful, interesting and also meaningful life. 1) I am glad there is another person who will go into war with me. Even though we are protecting different groups of people, I think we are both the same. We live for these people. They are our motivation to live on. Therefore, they cannot suffer. Although we do quarrel with them, it is just because we care for each other.

2) I am glad you remembered the supply of food and water. Without them, soldiers cannot go to war. People in the 21st century who lives in a modern city like Singapore are weak due to the comfort we live in. We will not be able to withstand the hunger and will eventually starve to death. That is one point I missed out. Thanks for reminding me.

1)What will I defend?
If there is a war, the first thing I would do is to get my family to a safe place before going back to defend my country like what fellow Singaporeans did during WWII. Defending our country is important as no matter where you migrate to, the country that you are born in is still your homeland. I will try all means to protect my country and prevent fellow Singaporeans from suffering under the enemy's hands.

2) The other three aspects that I will defend is of course my family as they were the ones who gave me support and they know what to do when a war comes, you wouldn't want to lose them in a war would you? The second thing that I would defend is the food supply, not to be funny or what, but when the food supply is out or confiscated by enemy's it would be a hard journey towards the end of the war or maybe wouldn't even make it till then. The third thing that I will defend is my relatives as they too, if are gone, my family and I will feel sad and wouldn't feel like living on anymore, my relatives are the ones who bring air of happiness during gatherings. These are the things that I will defend.

Q1)

What I hold most dear in life are my parents, and close friends and i would strive to protect and defend them in times of threat and crisis. My parents are the one and only reason that i am standing on dear old planet earth today. They are the one who raise me up and this process is not an easy one. It is a very difficult one all in all. From me being in my mother's womb, my dear mother have to suffer the 10 months of pain, from lots of injections to having lots of "side effects' from this pregnancy eg vommiting. After i was born, they have to wake up day and night to feed me. Whenever i cried, they will try their best to please me. Growing up, my parents have to work very hard outside to support the family and me. They always ensure i have the best of everything, be it shoes, clothes, bags, food e.t.c. They have done so much for me that left me in a life of umpayable debt and i will of course at all cost protect and defend them from everything i could think of. There is a chinese saying: At home, you rely on your family, outside, you rely on your close friends. Close friends are also one huge major factor that contributes to the me today. They go though everything with you, thick and thin. They help me go through every obstacles at sight. They are the one that do not betray or abandon you. They confort you when you are sad, pull you up when you have fallen, laugh with you when you are happy, hence all the more, i will protect and defend them in times of threats and crisis.

Q2)

The three different aspects are my country, my school and my pet. Country - i will also defend her to the very end. If there is a war, i am willing to exchange my life for the freedom of the country. Singapore have given me everything- friends, facilities, entertainment, knowledge e.t.c , so it is natural i will defend her of times of threat and crisis. Also i am really very proud to be a Singaporean. My School as it have given me knowledge, friends and values. Without them, i would be a very lonely and useless person, hence, it is natural that school is one of my picks to defend. Lastly, that is my pet. My pet have accompany me through lots of things. Whenever i came back home from school, it will wait for me at the door, refusing to leave. Whenever i am scolded my parents, he would be the one to cheer me. Whenever i go for a jog, he would always tag along with me. He makes a really good company. He is so adorable. To me, he is my brother as i have no siblings. Hence, it is also natural that i would defend him. If it were him, i am sure he would do the same...

1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?

2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you

1)In my opinion, what i hold most dear in life are my friends and family. These are the people that help me conquer through the thick and thins in life and develop me to what I am today.Firstly,my parents and my little brother are the most important people in my life. The first thing a new born baby will see in his or her life is the eyes of his or her mother. We all should know what challenges and difficulties our mother has to go through in her everyday life when you are in her stomach. She is not able to move around much and every time she does,it hurts. She has to watch her diet and make sure she provides us with enough vitamins and nutrients to ensure that we grow up normally and healthily. Our mums have done lots of things for us.When we grow into toddlers, she will be overjoyed when we are able to take our first step as she feels a great sense of achievement into bringing us up.She also has to put up with our little tantrums that we throw at her and teach us life-long lessons that we bring with us as we continue to grow and mature. Many times when we are toddlers,we puke and cry and our mothers have to comfort us by giving us a milk bottle or so.But,as we continue to grow, her encouragement starts to change into speaking and comforting us with her hands on our shoulders and letting us learn how to stand back up on our own feet.As the saying goes'Our parents are our first teachers in life'.They help develop the basic qualities within us to grow into a useful and responsible adult. Our fathers are also very important in our lives as they go to work everyday and come back, tired and exhausted with only one objective,to earn money to support the whole family. My parents have provided me with necessities such as food, water and other daily needs to grow into a healthy boy which is what i am today.Without them,I do not think that i would still be here typing out this post.My little brother is also important as he is the one that cheers me up sometimes when i am low in spirits and play games with me when I am bored.Lots of times,i get into arguments and fights with my brother but after awhile,I will feel very hurt and remember all that he has done for me and just apologize. As the saying goes'He ain't too heavy cause he is my brother'so he is also very important in my life.As for my friends, they are also very important in my life as i see them almost every single day as i go to school. They have always spoke up for me and encouraged and helped me to the extent that i have done what seems to be impossible. They usually help me in my homework and also talk with me when i feel dull and sad. These people have deeply changed my life and without them,I would be nothing so that is why i would strive and protect them at all costs in times of threats or crisis.

2)The three different aspects include my country, relatives and teachers.Without my country,I do not know where I am going to live.My country has provided me with so much and i am most certainly proud of it.Unlike other countries,Singapore has quite an acceptable level of crime rates and many people are kind hearted and generous in donating to the less fortunate people in the world such as NKF which stands for the national kidney foundation.Alot of people in Singapore also offer to do voluntary work at places such as the old age home to take care of the aged and play with them to add laughter to what they have left of their life.Singapore also is the country for the 2010 youth Olympic games as many young talents who train very hard battle it out to achieve a gold in as many events as they can.Although Singapore may not be the best for sports,I am confident that this will improve as i believe Singapore will not give up so easily.I am also very proud of how Singapore has developed and changed so much over the years and over these years,we have also developed many friendships with other countries. My relatives are also very important as although I seldom see them, they will have a lot to say to each other whenever we meet and update them on how we are doing in our life and any random stuff that keeps the conversation going. My teachers are also very important as they teach us new things everyday that we cannot learn elsewhere but in his or her classes. They have to withstand the nonsense that we students usually give them and mark numerous amounts of homework that we hand up to them.Although they scold us from time to time when we misbehave and hate some of them, once we graduate from the school,we will just take these scoldings as a joke and return to them and thank them for what they have done for us at the end of the day.

1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
The people that I strive to protect in times of crisis are my family. They are the ones that cheered me on whenever I feel down and the ones who forgive me when I did something wrong. My family had always been supporting me to give my best. There may be some quarrels with my family members, but they are ones that mattered to me so much that protecting them is like protecting my own soul.

2.For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why do you think these specific aspects are important to you.

The three different aspects are the care, the comfort, and the support. My family had always cared for me since I was young and make sure that I was safe and secure. They will lend a helping hand whenever I am in any difficulties or problems. When I am down and lonely, they will cheer me up, and tell me to move on. When I fall down, the support they gave me motivates me further to stand up and run again.

Q1) I agree with him that a person would normally protect and defend their own family members and relatives first as they accompanied you from the time you were borned till now. As well as they would protect you too the same way, hence, you should do the same thing back.

Q2) I agree with him that the country, friends, family and the home is the most important as without them, we would not survive. Or even if we do, we might not be able to live long till now.

1) I hold my family most dear in my life such that I would strive to protect and defend them in times of threat or crisis.

2)
The first aspect of why my family is most dear in my life is because I grew up with them. Since I grew up with them and have been living together for so long, naturally I will be attached to them and will put their lives above all others.
The second aspect of why my family is most dear in my life is because they are the people who truly care about and love me. My parents care for and love me because I am their son and my brothers are close to me as well since young. I love them as well and will protect them as much as I can.
The third aspect of why my family is most dear in my life is because they are my family after all. I must treasure my family for who they are because in my lifetime, I can have only one family who grew up with me since childhood (This excludes marriage, etc.).

1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
The things or should I say people that I will protect first and foremost are my family members and relatives because they are the ones that mean the most to me and pull me up when I fall and they are also the ones that share your joy and sorrow. They don't have grudges towards you, they will still forgive you. In times of need, they will stand by you and come to help you and even protect you from any imminent danger, never once throwing you to fend for yourself. Therefore, we should also stand by their side and protect them in times of crisis.

2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.
The three different aspects that are important to me are my Country, my Family & Friends and my belongings. My country, if a imminent danger is forecasted, like possible war or a breakout of a serious infection, I will still stay and help my country tide out its difficulties. My family and friends, our family and friends are like our food and water that support us throughout our lives, without them we are nothing. They help us when we are in need and never ask for repayment. Lastly, my belongings, some if the belongings I have have sentimental value to me. They remind me of important events that have happened in my life. I would not want to lose these memories as they are irreplacable and once gone, may never be regained.

What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?

I would protect and defend my family members in times of threat and crisis. When we encounter any problems, our family would always be there to help and support us. When we are in trouble, we would always put our heads together and think together on how to solve it. they play an important role in our life. From the start when i was born, i always depended on them for food and stuff. They always work hard to satisfy my need. the work they put in to raise me up from a child is something that cannot be repayed by money. the best thing i could do is to protect them from danger and stuff. making their live comfortable . this is the reason why i would protect them first in times of threat or crisis.

I agree that not everything in the world can be replaced by money and that we must never be ungrateful towards those who have shown us compassion. We must credit those for our success and not claim all the credit for ourselves. When we are young and unable to fend for ourselves, our parents and family members helped us. When they become old and aged, we must do the same towards them as well. Our country has provided us with affordable healthcare and education, so in dire times we must also play a part and contribute towards the rise and glory of our motherland, Singapore.

RE: Kenneth Liu's POST

1. I agree with your point, that we should repay our parents by supporting them when they are old and retired. However, from another viewpoint, they in turn would still want to protect us, since they have been looking out for us since birth, and still want to continue playing their role till their time is up.

2. I agree with you completely. We should feel gratitude to our country, our friends and our family.

My Viewpoint.

1. In a time of threat, i would strive to protect those dear to me, prioritising on my family members to my friends. Every single day of my life, i have been intereacting with these people, and life will never be the same without them. They are the ones who answer in times of need, they are the ones who lend me a helping hand when i fall, they are the ones who support me when i am unable to continue by myself. They are a vital part of my life, and i will protect them if need be.

2. My life, revolves around my family members, my friends, and my country, in order of priority. My family are those who have been around me since birth, they brought me up, and gave me education and provided for my needs. I am grateful to them, and will gladly be a sheild for them in times of crisis.
My Friends are those who have helped me when my family is unable to, they are ones that help me pull through and give me moral support.
My Country has provided me with education, and training, to become the person i am.

Sec 2 English E-learning: What will you defend?

I am Reynold Chia, Index No. 5 of 2I.
Here are my views on the questions given.

1) What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
In times like this, I will most definitely protect all my family if I have the power and ability to do so. In my family, my father has always been working very hard to earn money for the family and my mum has always been cooking food for me, doing housework There is also my younger brother, who has always accompanied me so that I won't feel lonely. He may be a nuisance at times, but I have to treasure him as he is the only sibling I have. I would like to protect them as they are the closest people to me in blood relation terms and have always protected me and took care of me since young. If there were a time of threat or crisis, I feel that it is just natural for us to return the favor by taking care of them. As the saying goes, "Blood is thicker than water", the bonds formed through blood running through the entire family is much stronger than bonds formed with friends of strangers, hence this is another reason why I want to protect my family first.

2) For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.
The three different aspects that I think are important to me are, family, friends and my country. Firstly, I think that family is important as they are the closest people to us who take care of us when we are down with an illness or when we need food or water to survive. Siblings in the family also keep us accompanied so that we won't feel so lonely. Secondly, I think that friends are important as they have supported and helped me when I am at the darkest of times, other than that, they also cheer me up when I am down, just like when I was recently down with a common flu, friends called me to make sure that I was alright, which made me feel much better. Therefore, I feel that friends are not just people who are there just to seek help from, but also part of our personal lives. Lastly, I think that my country is important as it holds so many potential people who can do great things to the society as there are many children who may grow up to be very useful and kind-hearted people. Thus, they must be protected. Hence, I think that my country is important.

What will I defend?

1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?

In times of crisis or threat, I'd first protect my family. Whenever I face any problems or difficulties, my family would always be the first to provide me with their support and encouragement. Regardless of how unfair it would be to them giving in to me all the time, they will not have any complaints and would just do anything that can make me happy. For all these things they have done, I would in return be the first to protect them from any danger, like how they would have done to me.

2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.

The three aspects are family, friends, followed by the country. Family always come first to me. They are always the one who "packs my parachute" and push me forward to strive greater success. Friends come in second in my life, they are the ones who are there for me and listen to whatever problems I have. Friends are people whom I trust, and I rant my unhappiness at them. Friends would also give advices for me, which would also make me feel better. Lastly, Singapore is important because she provides me a safe place to live in and proper education. Therefore it is important for Singaporeans to protect Singapore fearlessly, or else it is the future generation that suffer.

The three different aspects that are important to me are my Country, my Family & Friends and my home. My country, if a imminent danger is forecasted, like war or epidemic, I will still stay with my country and help out all I could even if I need to risk my live when doing that. My family and friends, our family and friends are like our beams and pillars that support us throughout our lives, whether physically or emotionally. They help us when we are in need and never turn down our pleads. Lastly, my home, as my home is the place where I stay and also the place where I had grown up from, therefore I will not let anybody harm it and I will fight those people to the end, even if it cost my live, everybody knows that school is a second home to us, thus, I as a part of my school and also a Marist, I will not let Maris Stella down.

23 June 2009 E -learning Assignment What will you defend?

Hi there, I am Kenneth Liu From 2I Reg. no. 15

1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?

The First thing I would protect would be my family. Since I was born, my family had been giving me moral support and trying to provide me with the best education so that I can be successful in life in the future. Family would always be there to catch us when we fall and encourage us to try again. My family brought me up from young, so to show gratitude for what they had done for me, I would want to protect them no matter what happens.

2. For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.

The three aspects that are important to me are my family, my friends and my country. I chose family because it gives me what I need and is always there when i need them. As most people say, blood is thicker than water, blood related people are people that will always be there for you, eg. family. Friends are important too as they make you feel better. They are also a good listener. Friends are able to make one happy when they are sad. Best friends specially go through thick and thin together with you and will never ever feel alone. Country is important as it is my homeland, where i was born and also where i belong. It gives me education, security and good living conditions. These 3 aspects are the most important to me and I would never want to lose them.

Done by : Kenneth Liu (15) 2I

What will I defend?

I would defend Singapore as I think that Singapore is our homeland and I think that some people may suggest protecting their family and processions but I would think if we do not protect our country, what is the use of protecting our family and processions if all would be lost. If there was a war to come, everyone should all put their lives on the line and make sure that we protect Singapore at all cause and we need more people who are willing as like what we learn in geography that the aging population is getting bigger and we could not send old and young people into the battle field. We must bring a sense of losing everything to the battlefield if we were to protect Singapore as if we were all only to care for ourselves, who will be there to protect Singapore. Sometimes we should not just like Singapore's Total Defense do all the protecting; the more we should join the Total Defense, as we will need to work together to overcome. My values would be vigilant, diligent and hardworking.

1. What do you hold most dear in life such that you would strive to protect and defend in times of threat or crisis?
To me, the first group of people to protect during a crisis is my family. To me, our family are both our financial and emotional support for us. In times of need, they will always be there to support you and always be the first one to help you. I know this may sound corny, but families are always the one who pick you up when you fall and will not leave you on the lurch, when you need them the most. My family is the pillar in my life. They supported me from the day I was born and I'm very grateful of that. So in return, I have to step up and protect them as they had protected me in times of need. In conclusion, I would sacrifice anything just to support them, and I would not be what I'm without their support and protection.

2.For the above question, state three different aspects and include in your responses, why you think these specific aspects are important to you.
The 3 different aspects are my family, friends and my country. Family always comes first in everything you do. They would also be to first one you would seek help from in times of need. As a chinese idiom says, 在家靠父母,出外靠朋友. It means that you depend on your parents when you're at home, and you depend on your friends when your in the outside world. So the second aspects are my friends. They provide emotional support, and may go through thick and thin with you. Last but not least is my country, Singapore. As Singapore has been an independence country since, 9 August 1965, we have to practise deterrence in case of any threat or crisis. So, as a Singapore citizen, I have to do my part in defending Singapore for the security and well being of the citizens.

What i hold most dearly to defend is my family. I agree with him that CCT surveilance is useful as it can be used as an extra pair of eyes as well as that it is expensive but many people need privacy and this is considered as invasion of privacy . Hence , if they lower the pricing , it will allow many people in buying it , and hence , many people will be lacking privacy already .

There are also disadvantages as there are advantages of a CCTV surveillance. The main disadvantage is privacy. Many people now has privacy issues at home and outside. The most common privacy problem is when a parent walks into a teenagers room without knocking. The teenagers gets a angry at their parents. Imagine this on a larger scale and the non-knocking surveillance is 24hrs? CCTVs are installed all over singapore without anyone knowing. It is like having your life as a movie 24/7. Too many CCTV surveillances may not be good as people of singapore will want their privacy too.

Reply:
Why do you think that the parents have to walk into the teenagers room every now and then? This is because nowadays , teenagers are being too addicted to the internet and thus the parents felt that they should control their child's time on the internet.Having said that, what are the advantages of installing a CCT camera in a teenagers room? This CCT can be used to monitor ur child's every movement in his room. For example if you are going out you can check if your child is secretly playing or watching any pornographic material online. This would definetely help in your monitoring of your child.Besides nowadays the CCT cameras are so small and you can hide it anywhere in his/her room without them knowing.Although there are few advantage of installing CCT cameras in a teenagers room, there are also a few disadvantages and i totally agree in intruding others privacy. At the puberty age teenagers are bound to want some freedom and will eventually dislike you from barging into their room every now and then and checking on them. This i felt will make it destroy the trust 'bridge' between you and your child.By further adding the CCT camera and if they happen to know about it, they will get very upset and bonds with your child might get worst. In conclusion i feel that installing CCT has pros and cons, regarding this "installing CCT in a teenagers room" issue.Checking on your child or giving him/her freedom, you decide.

Besides helping the police with security,CCT are placed at traffic lights and along roads to control traffic or even to the extend of identifying and finding a person who has probably gone missing for several days!CCT has played an important role in our lives,in terms of security and safety. Without them,we will be living in discomfort, knowing there is no one there to witness if something terrible happened to you.

My reply: I do not totally agree with you about identifying the person who committed the crime. If someone would to rob an old lady, who in the right mind will do that without a mask? If someone does that, that person is just trying to find trouble. So the CCT can only help the police force crack cases of the inexperienced ones but not the professional ones.

Comment in Feng Mings Post

I agree that CCTvs are important in our society nowadays. It has many useful functions that helps us in many ways that depends heavily on out manpower. Security guards can use the CCTVs as an extra eye to guard the shop or shopping centre for any thiefs or shop lifters. Also, there are DIsadvantages to CCTVs like privacy. Many people nowadays has no privacy because of CCTVs.

CCT surveillance

1) I feel that the CCT surveillance can help spot and capture the person caught in the tape and make the people feel safer as there will be another extra pair of “eyes” to look out for them. This can also help improve the environment that the people are leaving in, helping the people. This can also help people to monitor their households.

2) I fell that the CCT surveillance is expensive and they must also consider those people who want the equipment but does not have the capabilities to buy it so they must lower the pricing of the equipment so people who cannot afford can purchase it and help them have a piece of mind.

Like what Shu Han said, i totally agree with him.CCTV can be used to monitor people in every street of Singapore and might even keep the crime rate low. without CCTV , we live in a life of discomfort, knowing that no one is watching our back when someone tries to rob us or even be a witness to a car accident you are involved in. Overall, CCTV surveillance is very important to our country and the people.

CCTV surveillance does give the people indeed some discomfort. However, would you rather install a CCTV or get robbed? The discomfort maybe irritating but think about the advantages of having a CCTV, you would feel grateful if you are able to get back your valuables even though it intruded your privacy. Without CCTV, Singaporeans will not feel safe as the shoplift, murders and even traffic accidents will gradually increase.

Comment on marcus foo on disadvantage of cctv

I agree of marcus foo post whereby he said tat CCTV will invade our privacy
As he said, nobody wants anybody to go to his/her rm without knocking or without their permission
This is a form or manners and respect of others.
If nobody likes that, who will like CCTV looking at him/her for 24hr per day
Nobody would want to have no privacy.
And although CCTV was place in our room for our own safety
I do not think we really need a CCTV
There will not be any crime of there.
Even if there is, I do not think anyone would be so stupid to let their face be shown by the CCTV
They will probably wear a mask or cover their face with some other things

I agree with Feng Ming that CCT has proven to be a very useful device in our everyday life as it is like a security guard wherever you go. It helps the police in their investigation purposes and also helps to identify crime in times of danger to prevent innocent lives from being lost. It also serves as a strong warning to those who wants to commit crime. However, there are some CCT dummies that are sold in the market that are used as deterrence to people who wants to commit crime. An inexperienced burglar will think someone is watching him and forget the break in but experienced burglars know is the CCT are dummies as there are no cables linking it to a surveillance television. According to a report by University of Calgary professor Piers Steel, who is an an industrial psychologist, he claims that thieves know the danger situations according their personal experience that is what makes the CCT dummies not safe. Overall, CCT are useful devices in our life and I personally do not think that there will be a day we will live without CCT

Comment on Kelvin End disagreement with Kelvin See post.

CCTV should be installed as even if there is enough manpower, police would find it harder to nab the criminals as they do not know who are them and it takes time for them to investigate every details. With the CCTV, everything the criminal does would be recorded and used as evidence. There is no way the criminal could deny the fact that he had done the crime. The criminals would not be wearing mask as the police could hide the cameras well so no one would know where they are all at.

Although what you had say about the disadvantages of CCTV survellience is true but haven you thought that theives would give a second thought before breaking the laws. This CCTV survellience are able to track down the burglers if they had broke into your house. And i disagree with you on the difference of being a normal citizen and a prisoner. The CCTV survellience could guarantee that if your house is being broke into, the police will be able to catch the thieves and thus returning you the stuffs the thieves had stolen. I also disagree with you that even the thieves were wearing mask, the police could not be able to track them down.

i agree with him. surveillance camera can be used to monitor ex-offenders . they may commit their crime again. this will keep the civilians safety and keep the crime rate low. without cctv , we live in a life of fear, knowing that no one is watching your back when some crime is committed. therefore, surveillance camera is very important.

Comment on Kelwin See Chun Gan's Post on Friday, June 12 2009

I disagree with you when you say that CCTV surveillance should be installed in Singapore, Kelwin. The police need to be around the cameras to nab those the cameras spot, since all the cameras can do is to capture whatever everybody is doing on video tapes and can't possibly shoot laser beams at an offender, right? The cameras could be a waste of money if they cannot nab the offender. So manpower is still needed for this work.

What are the advantages of CCT serveillance ?

As now technologies are quite modern . CCT cameras are used as manpower . If have no CCT surveillance , we need alot of manpower to guard the place , if not , people will go against the law as theres nothing to monitor them . With CCT surveillance , we need not worry about people breaking the law and hence , lesser accidents would be formed . CCT Surveillance could also be used to be treated as evidence . If someone breaks the law , the CCT Surveillance could be used to bring the person to justice . And there is no way of the person saying no to the CCT surveillance as it simply records the happenings going on . Hence , with CCT surveillance , people would watch themselves as not to do things that breaks the law .

What are the advantages of CCT surveillance?

With modern technology, lesser manpower will be needed to monitor a large area using the CCT surveillance. For example, in the past, when there is no CCT surveillance, three to four people will be needed to patrol a large area but with the use of CCT surveillance, lesser manpower will be needed. CCT surveillance can be installed in any place and only one person will be required to monitor all these areas. CCT surveillance also has recording function. Depending on the user requirement, the records can be kept as long as possible. When needed, the footage can be viewed to see what had happened. This is very useful as it helps the police to look up for suspects and witnesses. It helps police to verify facts against what the suspect had claimed.

Re: What are the advantages of CCT surveillance ?

Regarding Toh Shu Han's article, as shown below:
"Closed circuit televison, CCT, has been used for many years in almost every country. The primary use for CCT system are surveillance, traffic control, theft, shoplifting, employee theft, robbery deterrence, and identification. CCT decreases the amount of shoptheft as people will think twice of shoplifting as the camera is able to capture their every move and chances of them being caught red handed is high. CCT also helps the police in many different ways like identifying a thift or terrorist. CCT are used mostly in banks, airports and casinos where monitoring is important to prevent terrorism or any accidents that are likely to happen."

Firstly, I agree with the statement that CCTV has been used for many years in almost every country. From this, I can conclude it is an essential part of our lives; it provides added security
so efficiently that almost every country has it. However, CCTV, efficient as it is, fails to fulfill one of its primary purposes, that is, to deter crime. Reports have shown that police are no more likely to catch offenders in areas with hundreds of cameras than in those with hardly any, and that only 3% of crimes in London were solved by CCTV. Having said so far, CCTV still proves efficient in one aspect, that is, monitoring. Many high-profile criminals and terrorists were identified and arrested with the help of CCTV, saving the lives of hundreds, maybe thousands.

Disadvantages of CCTV

There are some disadvantages of CCTV. One of them is our privacy. Imagine living in a world where CCTV is install everywhere, no matter where you go, there will be eyes on you. Who would want to live in that world? There is no secret and what difference is that as a normal citizen and a prisoner? And even if CCTV was install, does that really guarantee our safety? The culprit of thievery, murder or robbery just have to wear a mask and everything will be fine. The culprit can also find the angle where CCTV will not be able to locate them to commit some crime. What if a person was at a place with CCTV so he let his guard down and a person just attack him with a mask on, would the CCTV be responsible for what it has done? What if the guy who was attacked was dead and CCTV cannot find the culprit, then what is the point of installing them? Just to treat everyone in the world as prisoners? Thus, CCTV should not be place at too many places.

What are the advantages of CCT surveillance ?

during this period of economic downturn, crimes will increase as people tend to do thing stupid when they have no money. CCTV surveillance will therefore be able to capture the process of being robbed or other crime e.g rape :D . this will make the life of police easier as they can track down the thieves easier , then to find randomly. another good thing about having CCTV is that the thieves will not dare to commit crime under surveillance . they will be more self conscience and keep their hands to themselves :D . this would therefore keep the people safe from crime .

What are the advantages of CCT surveillance ?

Having CCT surveillance is a good thing as firstly, it is able to record down the happenings of the day. This will make it easier for people to trace any events that had happened on that day. Secondly, having the CCT surveillance, potential thieves and burglars will be deterred from committing crime. Thus the CCT surveillance is able to kill two birds with one stone. Therefore, with the help and assistance of the CCT surveillance, it would be able to provide a safe place for us to live in and help to maintain peace within our community, ensuring us to live our days with no worries.

Do you think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes ?

I think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes. With the economic downturn, people would be jobless and they would turn into stealing to get on with life. With the CCTV installed, many areas would be protected from any crimes. Criminals would not dare to make any crime as if they do so, they would be caught on the CCTV and arrested. Everything would be taken on the screen and people would feel safer to live in places with the CCTV.
Ng Hao Yi

What are the disadvantages of CCT surveillance?

There are many disadvantages of CCT surveillance, one thing is privacy, with so many CCT surveillance around, it is nearly impossible for people on the streets to find a place where privacy is given. Another disadvantage of CCT surveillance is terrorism, if terrorists were to really take control of all main utilities and CCTV's it would cripple the economy as terrorists can look out onto the streets without being there and monitor every movement the police makes and the terrorists would know how to counter them. Hence, it is better to put more police patrolling the streets and use old-fashioned convex mirrors to look around corners rather than CCTV's.

From: Terry Tan (34)

CCTV invades citizen's privacy

Closed-Circuit television or also known as CCTV is widely used in Singapore today.  The aftermath of September 11 in New York has caused security awareness around the world. The Singapore government and the private sector have also tighten their security surveillance to prevent radical terrorist attack on public places by installing CCTVs everywhere.

However, I feel that  the widely used CCTV has deprives individual rights to move freely without being monitored consciously or unconsciously by the government. Each citizen's rights as stipulated in the Constitution has to be uphold or respected at all time.

Sadly this has not been the case in Singapore for example a motorist is being monitored by the Land Transport Authority (LTA)'s electronic road pricing system. Initially, the purpose of installing the CCTV on highways is to monitor and control the traffic congestion but the motorist movement can be monitored by the government for other purposes.

Another example is the Housing Development Board(HDB) installation CCTVs in its lift. Again  the main purpose of installing the security device was to capture people urinating in the lifts but the residents' movement are also being monitored consciously.

I feel that although we can see the benefits of these CCTV, we should also have some space for privacy. If there is CCTV around, all of our action would be recorded and there would be no privacy. Like i have mentioned earlier, each citizen's rights as stipulated in the Constitution has to be uphold or respected at all time. Thus we should have some freedom if the government lessen the number of CCTV in Singapore.

What are the disadvantages of CCT surveillance ?

I think even with CCTV, shoplifters can just cover their faces with a mask. By doing so, I doubt that the police can find out who the shoplifter is. Even with face matching system, they cannot find a exact match. In certain terrorism cases, they often have high-tech gadgets like the camera jammer. If they know where the cameras are, they can jam the cameras temporary. However, enough for the terrorists to escape. Also, even with those CCTV, people can go right under and the CCTV will not be able to see them since the cameras are only build for certain angles. Hackers can also hack into the government system and stop the CCTV from working. I am just trying to state a point that CCTV will not be able to stop the more professional shoplifters/terrorists and will also invade the privacy of others. Installing CCTV will also help the shoplifters/terrorist improve their skills. That will make them harder to catch next time.

Do you think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes?

I feel that Singapore should step up on CCTV surveillance in wake of the economic downturn and the rise of crime rates. Due to the economic downturn, there is a rise of crime rates, causing people to be in danger. To pre-empt these things from happening, the government installs security cameras in important areas, district. Installing one of these cameras could cost at least $140, but it reduces the workload of the security guards and policemen, and it is more effective in preventing crimes. When the criminals are caught red handed, the tapes that were filmed using the camera would be used as evidence against them, upholding justice. In some cases, although the harm has already been done, we could still stop the criminal from creating more trouble by catching them with sufficient evidence using the tape that was recorded down in the security camera. This evidence is more reliable to human witnesses as it shows the fact of what really happen around the region it is suppose to film with a bird’s eye view. To ensure the people’s privacy, the government should inform them before installing cameras. They should also put up a notice telling the people that there is a camera around the surroundings, walk with their own risk. Lately, Singaporeans living in HDB installs dummy CCTV. As we know, HDB regulations do not allow CCTVs even fake ones. But because of the increasing number of residents still buying the dummies as a cheap form of deterrence against break-ins, vandalism, theft and loan-shark. When these dummies, it could still protect the privacy of the neighbors staying in the same block with you and also reduce crime rates. It is part of human nature to behave ourselves when you see that your being watched or you notice a camera. Although Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world, lets not let our guards down, it is easy to for Singapore to be a safe country, but it is hard to maintain it that way.

Signing off,

Aron Chen Yi-Jia (03)
