Comment on YewJin's post

I agree with him that CCT surveilance is useful as it can be used as an extra pair of eyes as well as that it is expensive but many people need privacy and this is considered as invasion of privacy . Hence , if they lower the pricing , it will allow many people in buying it , and hence , many people will be lacking privacy already .

There are also disadvantages as there are advantages of a CCTV surveillance. The main disadvantage is privacy. Many people now has privacy issues at home and outside. The most common privacy problem is when a parent walks into a teenagers room without knocking. The teenagers gets a angry at their parents. Imagine this on a larger scale and the non-knocking surveillance is 24hrs? CCTVs are installed all over singapore without anyone knowing. It is like having your life as a movie 24/7. Too many CCTV surveillances may not be good as people of singapore will want their privacy too.

Reply:
Why do you think that the parents have to walk into the teenagers room every now and then? This is because nowadays , teenagers are being too addicted to the internet and thus the parents felt that they should control their child's time on the internet.Having said that, what are the advantages of installing a CCT camera in a teenagers room? This CCT can be used to monitor ur child's every movement in his room. For example if you are going out you can check if your child is secretly playing or watching any pornographic material online. This would definetely help in your monitoring of your child.Besides nowadays the CCT cameras are so small and you can hide it anywhere in his/her room without them knowing.Although there are few advantage of installing CCT cameras in a teenagers room, there are also a few disadvantages and i totally agree in intruding others privacy. At the puberty age teenagers are bound to want some freedom and will eventually dislike you from barging into their room every now and then and checking on them. This i felt will make it destroy the trust 'bridge' between you and your child.By further adding the CCT camera and if they happen to know about it, they will get very upset and bonds with your child might get worst. In conclusion i feel that installing CCT has pros and cons, regarding this "installing CCT in a teenagers room" issue.Checking on your child or giving him/her freedom, you decide.

My reply: I do not totally agree with you about identifying the person who committed the crime. If someone would to rob an old lady, who in the right mind will do that without a mask? If someone does that, that person is just trying to find trouble. So the CCT can only help the police force crack cases of the inexperienced ones but not the professional ones.

Comment in Feng Mings Post

I agree that CCTvs are important in our society nowadays. It has many useful functions that helps us in many ways that depends heavily on out manpower. Security guards can use the CCTVs as an extra eye to guard the shop or shopping centre for any thiefs or shop lifters. Also, there are DIsadvantages to CCTVs like privacy. Many people nowadays has no privacy because of CCTVs.

CCT surveillance

1) I feel that the CCT surveillance can help spot and capture the person caught in the tape and make the people feel safer as there will be another extra pair of “eyes” to look out for them. This can also help improve the environment that the people are leaving in, helping the people. This can also help people to monitor their households.

2) I fell that the CCT surveillance is expensive and they must also consider those people who want the equipment but does not have the capabilities to buy it so they must lower the pricing of the equipment so people who cannot afford can purchase it and help them have a piece of mind.

Like what Shu Han said, i totally agree with him.CCTV can be used to monitor people in every street of Singapore and might even keep the crime rate low. without CCTV , we live in a life of discomfort, knowing that no one is watching our back when someone tries to rob us or even be a witness to a car accident you are involved in. Overall, CCTV surveillance is very important to our country and the people.

CCTV surveillance does give the people indeed some discomfort. However, would you rather install a CCTV or get robbed? The discomfort maybe irritating but think about the advantages of having a CCTV, you would feel grateful if you are able to get back your valuables even though it intruded your privacy. Without CCTV, Singaporeans will not feel safe as the shoplift, murders and even traffic accidents will gradually increase.

I agree of marcus foo post whereby he said tat CCTV will invade our privacy
As he said, nobody wants anybody to go to his/her rm without knocking or without their permission
This is a form or manners and respect of others.
If nobody likes that, who will like CCTV looking at him/her for 24hr per day
Nobody would want to have no privacy.
And although CCTV was place in our room for our own safety
I do not think we really need a CCTV
There will not be any crime of there.
Even if there is, I do not think anyone would be so stupid to let their face be shown by the CCTV
They will probably wear a mask or cover their face with some other things

I agree with Feng Ming that CCT has proven to be a very useful device in our everyday life as it is like a security guard wherever you go. It helps the police in their investigation purposes and also helps to identify crime in times of danger to prevent innocent lives from being lost. It also serves as a strong warning to those who wants to commit crime. However, there are some CCT dummies that are sold in the market that are used as deterrence to people who wants to commit crime. An inexperienced burglar will think someone is watching him and forget the break in but experienced burglars know is the CCT are dummies as there are no cables linking it to a surveillance television. According to a report by University of Calgary professor Piers Steel, who is an an industrial psychologist, he claims that thieves know the danger situations according their personal experience that is what makes the CCT dummies not safe. Overall, CCT are useful devices in our life and I personally do not think that there will be a day we will live without CCT

CCTV should be installed as even if there is enough manpower, police would find it harder to nab the criminals as they do not know who are them and it takes time for them to investigate every details. With the CCTV, everything the criminal does would be recorded and used as evidence. There is no way the criminal could deny the fact that he had done the crime. The criminals would not be wearing mask as the police could hide the cameras well so no one would know where they are all at.

This CCTV survellience are able to track down the burglers if they had broke into your house. And i disagree with you on the difference of being a normal citizen and a prisoner. The CCTV survellience could guarantee that if your house is being broke into, the police will be able to catch the thieves and thus returning you the stuffs the thieves had stolen. I also disagree with you that even the thieves were wearing mask, the police could not be able to track them down.

I disagree with you when you say that CCTV surveillance should be installed in Singapore, Kelwin. The police need to be around the cameras to nab those the cameras spot, since all the cameras can do is to capture whatever everybody is doing on video tapes and can't possibly shoot laser beams at an offender, right? The cameras could be a waste of money if they cannot nab the offender. So manpower is still needed for this work.

What are the advantages of CCT serveillance ?

As now technologies are quite modern . CCT cameras are used as manpower . If have no CCT surveillance , we need alot of manpower to guard the place , if not , people will go against the law as theres nothing to monitor them . With CCT surveillance , we need not worry about people breaking the law and hence , lesser accidents would be formed . CCT Surveillance could also be used to be treated as evidence . If someone breaks the law , the CCT Surveillance could be used to bring the person to justice . And there is no way of the person saying no to the CCT surveillance as it simply records the happenings going on . Hence , with CCT surveillance , people would watch themselves as not to do things that breaks the law .

What are the advantages of CCT surveillance?

With modern technology, lesser manpower will be needed to monitor a large area using the CCT surveillance. For example, in the past, when there is no CCT surveillance, three to four people will be needed to patrol a large area but with the use of CCT surveillance, lesser manpower will be needed. CCT surveillance can be installed in any place and only one person will be required to monitor all these areas. CCT surveillance also has recording function. Depending on the user requirement, the records can be kept as long as possible. When needed, the footage can be viewed to see what had happened. This is very useful as it helps the police to look up for suspects and witnesses. It helps police to verify facts against what the suspect had claimed.

Re: What are the advantages of CCT surveillance ?

Regarding Toh Shu Han's article, as shown below:
"Closed circuit televison, CCT, has been used for many years in almost every country. The primary use for CCT system are surveillance, traffic control, theft, shoplifting, employee theft, robbery deterrence, and identification. CCT decreases the amount of shoptheft as people will think twice of shoplifting as the camera is able to capture their every move and chances of them being caught red handed is high. CCT also helps the police in many different ways like identifying a thift or terrorist. CCT are used mostly in banks, airports and casinos where monitoring is important to prevent terrorism or any accidents that are likely to happen."

Firstly, I agree with the statement that CCTV has been used for many years in almost every country. From this, I can conclude it is an essential part of our lives; it provides added security
so efficiently that almost every country has it. However, CCTV, efficient as it is, fails to fulfill one of its primary purposes, that is, to deter crime. Reports have shown that police are no more likely to catch offenders in areas with hundreds of cameras than in those with hardly any, and that only 3% of crimes in London were solved by CCTV. Having said so far, CCTV still proves efficient in one aspect, that is, monitoring. Many high-profile criminals and terrorists were identified and arrested with the help of CCTV, saving the lives of hundreds, maybe thousands.

Disadvantages of CCTV

There are some disadvantages of CCTV. One of them is our privacy. Imagine living in a world where CCTV is install everywhere, no matter where you go, there will be eyes on you. Who would want to live in that world? There is no secret and what difference is that as a normal citizen and a prisoner? And even if CCTV was install, does that really guarantee our safety? The culprit of thievery, murder or robbery just have to wear a mask and everything will be fine. The culprit can also find the angle where CCTV will not be able to locate them to commit some crime. What if a person was at a place with CCTV so he let his guard down and a person just attack him with a mask on, would the CCTV be responsible for what it has done? What if the guy who was attacked was dead and CCTV cannot find the culprit, then what is the point of installing them? Just to treat everyone in the world as prisoners? Thus, CCTV should not be place at too many places.

during this period of economic downturn, crimes will increase as people tend to do thing stupid when they have no money. CCTV surveillance will therefore be able to capture the process of being robbed or other crime e.g rape :D . this will make the life of police easier as they can track down the thieves easier , then to find randomly. another good thing about having CCTV is that the thieves will not dare to commit crime under surveillance . they will be more self conscience and keep their hands to themselves :D . this would therefore keep the people safe from crime .

Having CCT surveillance is a good thing as firstly, it is able to record down the happenings of the day. This will make it easier for people to trace any events that had happened on that day. Secondly, having the CCT surveillance, potential thieves and burglars will be deterred from committing crime. Thus the CCT surveillance is able to kill two birds with one stone. Therefore, with the help and assistance of the CCT surveillance, it would be able to provide a safe place for us to live in and help to maintain peace within our community, ensuring us to live our days with no worries.

I think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes. With the economic downturn, people would be jobless and they would turn into stealing to get on with life. With the CCTV installed, many areas would be protected from any crimes. Criminals would not dare to make any crime as if they do so, they would be caught on the CCTV and arrested. Everything would be taken on the screen and people would feel safer to live in places with the CCTV.

What are the disadvantages of CCT surveillance?

There are many disadvantages of CCT surveillance, one thing is privacy, with so many CCT surveillance around, it is nearly impossible for people on the streets to find a place where privacy is given. Another disadvantage of CCT surveillance is terrorism, if terrorists were to really take control of all main utilities and CCTV's it would cripple the economy as terrorists can look out onto the streets without being there and monitor every movement the police makes and the terrorists would know how to counter them. Hence, it is better to put more police patrolling the streets and use old-fashioned convex mirrors to look around corners rather than CCTV's.

From: Terry Tan (34)

CCTV invades citizen's privacy

Closed-Circuit television or also known as CCTV is widely used in Singapore today.  The aftermath of September 11 in New York has caused security awareness around the world. The Singapore government and the private sector have also tighten their security surveillance to prevent radical terrorist attack on public places by installing CCTVs everywhere.

However, I feel that  the widely used CCTV has deprives individual rights to move freely without being monitored consciously or unconsciously by the government. Each citizen's rights as stipulated in the Constitution has to be uphold or respected at all time.

Sadly this has not been the case in Singapore for example a motorist is being monitored by the Land Transport Authority (LTA)'s electronic road pricing system. Initially, the purpose of installing the CCTV on highways is to monitor and control the traffic congestion but the motorist movement can be monitored by the government for other purposes.

Another example is the Housing Development Board(HDB) installation CCTVs in its lift. Again  the main purpose of installing the security device was to capture people urinating in the lifts but the residents' movement are also being monitored consciously.

I feel that although we can see the benefits of these CCTV, we should also have some space for privacy. If there is CCTV around, all of our action would be recorded and there would be no privacy. Like i have mentioned earlier, each citizen's rights as stipulated in the Constitution has to be uphold or respected at all time. Thus we should have some freedom if the government lessen the number of CCTV in Singapore.
Tan Jia hao(30)2I

What are the disadvantages of CCT surveillance ?

I think even with CCTV, shoplifters can just cover their faces with a mask. By doing so, I doubt that the police can find out who the shoplifter is. Even with face matching system, they cannot find a exact match. In certain terrorism cases, they often have high-tech gadgets like the camera jammer. If they know where the cameras are, they can jam the cameras temporary. However, enough for the terrorists to escape. Also, even with those CCTV, people can go right under and the CCTV will not be able to see them since the cameras are only build for certain angles. Hackers can also hack into the government system and stop the CCTV from working. I am just trying to state a point that CCTV will not be able to stop the more professional shoplifters/terrorists and will also invade the privacy of others. Installing CCTV will also help the shoplifters/terrorist improve their skills. That will make them harder to catch next time.

Do you think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes?

I feel that Singapore should step up on CCTV surveillance in wake of the economic downturn and the rise of crime rates. Due to the economic downturn, there is a rise of crime rates, causing people to be in danger. To pre-empt these things from happening, the government installs security cameras in important areas, district. Installing one of these cameras could cost at least $140, but it reduces the workload of the security guards and policemen, and it is more effective in preventing crimes. When the criminals are caught red handed, the tapes that were filmed using the camera would be used as evidence against them, upholding justice. In some cases, although the harm has already been done, we could still stop the criminal from creating more trouble by catching them with sufficient evidence using the tape that was recorded down in the security camera. This evidence is more reliable to human witnesses as it shows the fact of what really happen around the region it is suppose to film with a bird’s eye view. To ensure the people’s privacy, the government should inform them before installing cameras. They should also put up a notice telling the people that there is a camera around the surroundings, walk with their own risk. Lately, Singaporeans living in HDB installs dummy CCTV. As we know, HDB regulations do not allow CCTVs even fake ones. But because of the increasing number of residents still buying the dummies as a cheap form of deterrence against break-ins, vandalism, theft and loan-shark. When these dummies, it could still protect the privacy of the neighbors staying in the same block with you and also reduce crime rates. It is part of human nature to behave ourselves when you see that your being watched or you notice a camera. Although Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world, lets not let our guards down, it is easy to for Singapore to be a safe country, but it is hard to maintain it that way.

advantages of cctv

CCTV (closed circuit television) is a television system in which cameras are connected to television monitors in a limited area such as a store, an office building, or on a college campus and it is commonly used as surveillance systems. There is a lot of advantages of using CCTV as a kind of surveillance tool. Using CCTVs, police are able to capture the image of people committing crimes and thus reducing the amount of crimes. Besides that, police also used CCTV to fight terrorism.

The advantages of CCT surveillance

As we all know, CCTV, also known as Closed-Circuit Television, is an example of a surveillance tool, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. It is most commonly used in areas that need monitoring, such as banks, casinos, airports and convenience stores as these places are more prone to security breaches such as theft and robbery. The advantages of using CCTV are numerous, one example with the most measurable effect is on a small number of high media-profile case of detection, such as detecting or identifying terrorists. CCTV is also used to track the movements of missing children, supervising industrial processes that take place under conditions dangerous to humans, though these are mainly processes in the chemical industry, in the interior of reactors or facilities for manufacture of nuclear fuel, and traffic monitoring, which will enable identification of stolen cars, detecting congestion and accidents. Though some may say that CCTV is also used for crime prevention, there has been little evidence that CCTV deter criminals or would-be criminals from committing a crime. Several analysis and reports show that the police are no more likely to catch offenders in areas with hundreds of cameras than in those with hardly any, and that only 3% of the crimes in the United Kingdom were solved by CCTV.

What are the advantages of CCT surveillance ?

Singapore was known as one of the safest country as it has the lowest crime rate in the whole world. But that does not mean that crime will not strike, CCTV is important as is was a useful tool to find the criminal and it can be use as evidence. With the CCTV, I do not think anyone will dare to steal from that certain place. Without the CCTV, robbery, thieves, murder, all these crime have a higher chance to appear in Singapore. The CCTV also acts as a warning for the robbers not to do anything breaking the law. CCTV was also use to monitor the traffic to catch any speeding driver. This will allows them not to speed as they will get fine and thus creating a more safety place to drive. CCTV was also use to monitor children as sometimes maids will abuse them. They can also see if the children is doing anything dangerous and thus can prevent any accident. So, CCTV was install for each and everyone's safety.

The Advantages Of CCTV Surveillance

As we all know that Singapore has the lowest crime rate in the whole world, we should not let that information make us feel that Singapore is the safest country in the world. As seen in the youtube video, the CCTV are labelled by the New York Police Department so that no one would try to do silly stuff, knowing that the NYPD are watching you through the CCTV that is rolling 24/7. It clearly showed that by installing the CCTV, lesser crimes would occur and it could help to deter terrorism (which is a big issue).
As seen in the video, 505 CCTV are going to be installed and known as "The Ring Of Steel" around New York, especially around the business district, which is the main target for terrorism. Some may feel that the CCTV have intruded their privacy but ask yourself this question. Would you want to live in a place where there is not even a single CCTV installed to protect the privacy of the citizens and there would be crimes happening every time of the day, or would you want to live in a place with CCTV installed every corner of the street and buildings so that lesser crimes would happen?
CCTV have a great help in tracking down suspect for the London bombing that happen not long ago, it is both a good investigation tool and a good means of deterrence. There is 100 CCTV that belongs to the Chicago Police Department, 25 of those have a smart technology that can hear guns shot and turn towards where the noise is coming from, they can also identify what kind of gun is being fired. In LA, there has been a 16% drop in crime after the CCTV are installed. So, the CCTV are not an tool that is used to intrude your privacy but as a tool that could help the country to be a safer one.

What are the disadvantages of CCT surveillance ?

The disadvantages of CCT surveillance is that people will have less privacy. I mean seriously who in the world would want others to see what you are doing 24/7. They will make me feel like a prisoner or someone who is having house quarantined by H1N1 disease. Like example, when it is late at night, and you and your girlfriend or boyfriend is at the alley doing intimate stuff but you would not know that someone or somegroup of people are actually watching you. As not everyone, including the policeman are busybodies. When they see someone kissing or doing other things, they would call for other of their friends to join in the fun by watching through the CCT surveillance. CCTV are not always effective in using. Example, when a robber comes into a shop to steal things, he could always hide from the CCTV or just cut off the electricity supply as the CCTV must be controlled or it would be stationed there and it runs by electricity. Sometimes because of CCTV, the people will feel safe and unknowingly let his/her guard down as they would feel safe because of CCTV as they feel that if any things happen, they can easily look back at the tape of the CCTV, without knowingly that sometimes the CCTV did not catch the incident.

The advantages of a CCT surveilliance

Singapore is one of the few countries that can puff up her chest and say that she has one of the lowest crime rate in the world, but we must never let our guard down or get complacent. As seen from a terrorist, Mas Selamat, due to complacency, this guy escaped. With the CCT surveilliance, the police could cover more ground and to be able to apprehend this criminal. The installation of CCT surveilliance is also essential and productive. It lessens down the man power needed to patrol areas as one man can view several cameras. In some cases, this CCT cameras were able to record down crimes being committed thus bringing the culprit down to justice within hours. CCT cameras also provide a sense of security to those around it. Without CCT surveilliance, terrorist would be able to carry out secret operations throughout the cities with ease as patrols are not nesccesarily covering everywhere. With CCT surveilliance, we are able to survey the whole city and cut down the man power needed to keep vigilance in the place. With manpower cut down, lesser money is needed to provide a high level security, thus the government could swint their financial support to other areas which are crippled by this economic downturn.

What are the advantages of CCTV surveillance ?

CCTV (also known as Closed Circuit Television Cameras) is used all over the world. CCTV is used for traffic control, theft, shoplifting, employee theft, robbery deterrence, and identification. Without CCTV there will be more and more crimes committed like robberies and thefts. CCTV is important as it can maintain the safety of public places. It can provide evidence to prove that the person had committed crime. CCTV can also be installed on the road to detect congestion and notice accidents. Other than that, industrial processes that take place under conditions dangerous for humans are today often supervised by CCTV. These are mainly processes in the chemical industry, the interior of reactors or facilities for manufacture of nuclear fuel. Therefore, CCTV is very important.

Do you think Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase inthe number of crimes?

Being environmental friendly, i am on the view that Singapore should not step up on CCT surveillance because switching on CCTVs could waste a lot of our energy. Saving electricity is just like saving water, is a small step we could take to stop global warming. Thus, saving electricity to save our Earth plays an even bigger role in our fight against climate change than our fight against crimes. Moreover, the cost for installing CCTVs around Singapore is very high. If the cameras are turned on 24hours a day, 7 days a week, the government's electrical bills would definitely skyrocket. if the government electrical bills increases, it would mean that we would have to pay more taxes to cover the expenses for installing the cameras. CCTVs should be installed in posh buildings or somewhere which have something important to the government. Singapore should not install CCTVs all around Singapore as small little wimpy thieves are not worth our money at all. Moreover, the thieves would be crafty enough to wear a mask when committing a crime. The cameras would be useless and would only be a nuisance to us and waste a lot of money. If CCTVs are installed, people feel that they are being intruded of their own privacy. Imagine if there are people stalking you everywhere you go, would you be comfortable? For me, my answer is 'NO'! That's why Singapore should not step up on CCT surveillance.

Do you think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes?

I think that Singapore should not step up to CCT surveillance. The main reason is the fact that Singapore simply does not need to install surveillance cameras in its streets and significant places. As the crime rates in Singapore is among the lowest in the world, it is not reasonable to install several surveillance cameras in the busiest streets just to catch petty crimes offenders.  Surveillance cameras installed in public places are to sniff out suspicious characters that might be terrorists or murderers and also the process of the violent crime that happened. This applies to Britain and United states as terrorism posed a serious problem to them. However, a small and well-secured country like Singapore just does not need to install surveillance cameras in the streets. To lower the crime rate in Singapore, we can be alert, vigilant and report any suspicious person to the police. The second reason that Singapore should not step up to surveillance camera is the cost of maintaining it. The cameras had to be switched on 24 hours everyday, and the electricity it consumed is quite a lot. Hence, the government had to invest on a huge sum of money to invest on the maintenance of these cameras in this economical downturn, which might be unnecessary. The final reason is the issue on privacy. If surveillance cameras are installed everywhere, the people will feel that they were being tracked everywhere, and this causes them to lose their freedom. Hence, I think Singapore should not install surveillance cameras in its streets for now.

I feel that Singapore should step up on CCT. If argued that the stepping up of CCT will be a hinder to the country’s economic because of the downturn, then it would be very wrong then. It is only through the installation of CCT that will control the number of crimes to the minimum especially the number of crimes have been rising, hence making the country a safer and more conducive environment to work in. For instance, if a country refuses to step up on CCT despite the increase of crimes to prevent it from hindering the country’s economic as installing more CCT requires a lot of money, hence, making the country a dangerous place to work in. Citizens will fear for their lives everyday and have no will of working, hence unable to steer the country to higher economic level, hence the more the downturn of the country’s economic. To me, safety should not be compromised in place of economic. Safety should come first. It is only by having a safe place to work that the country’s economic will prosper, hence, feeling that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes.

CCTV should be installed

Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) are used to monitor

and record images of what takes place in specific locations in real time. The images collected are sent to a monitor and recorded on video tape or as digital information. The cameras can be fixed or set to scan an area or they can be operated by controllers. Monitors can be watched by controllers or left unmonitored. The recorded information can be stored and/or reviewed by those who have access to the recordings at their convenience.

From the information above,CCTV is proven to be useful.... and especially in the economic downfall now, people easily get retrenched by their companies and some may resort to stealing to support their daily needs....CCTV are proven to useful as many have been caught stealing on CCTV...By installing more CCTV,the crime rate in singapore is likely to be lowered making it a safer place

What are the advantages of CCT surveillance ?

CCTVs in Singapore are one of the most useful tools to catch criminals and uncover crimes. These small and hidden cameras are placed in hard to find places, yet at a angle that it can video the whole scene clearly. From these angles, the police could use these footages as evidences in court. Also, these little cameras could serve as half sercurity guards as the shop owner could place the CCTV at the corner of the store and when the guard in a sercurity room sees it, they could immediately take action. These servillance cameras has proved useful as many shoplifters has been caught and many shoplifters are now aware of the hidden cameras and does not try to shop left. During resession, many people are getting desperate until the extent of stealing form other peoples home. The number of loan sharks have also risen these few years. Due to these actions, many people bought CCTVs to be safe from these criminals. Nowadys, parents have installed CCTVs to monitor their children or maids. For example, an Indonesian maid was jailed for nine months after she was caught ill- treating her employer's infant son. The parents had installed a CCTV system in the living room and saw the abuse of the 21/2-year-old. With these examples, it is important to have CCTVs in Sinagpore for our saftey and comfort and cannot be left out in survillance and sercurity plans.

Why singapore should not step up on cctv surveillance

I do no think that singapore should step up on cctv surveillance as it would only waste money. Firstly, there are rarely many crimes that happen in singapore. And even if many crimes are happening, I think the criminal would be smart enough to hide his identity by wearing a mask over his or her face and wear gloves to prevent being detected. So even if there was a cctv around , it would only be able to catch the criminals doing the crime and nothing else. Also, during this economy crisis, i don't think that the government should be wasting precious money on cctv cameras. And lastly, if cctv cameras are placed all over the streets and corridors, many people would not be happy with their lack of privacy as they may not like a cctv watching their houses 24 hours,7 days a week. Hence, I think that singapore should not step up on cctv surveillance and only place cctv cameras at places that require high security like jails and such.

Do you think that Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance in light of the economic downturn and the increase in the number of crimes?

Done by: Glen Tay Yu Xuan (33)

Singapore should not step up on CCTV surveillance. Firstly, in this economic downturn, we should save more money. If CCTVs are installed in public areas and is working 24hours a day 7 days a week, there would an increase in the government’s electricity bills. And indirectly the citizens would be paying more and more taxes! Also, if criminals are to commit crimes, I think they would be smart enough to wear masks that would prevent their faces from being seen by CCTVs. Therefore, I feel that it would be useless if Singapore installs CCTVs on streets or any public places.

What are the advantages of CCT surveillance ?

There was news recently that mentions that the Americans are buying guns to protect themselves from break-ins and also protect them when they feel threatened, therefore what we can do as Singaporeans are just some protective preventions as the government in Singapore does not authorize the purchase of guns, thus, we can only use only protect ourselves by using the CCTV surveillance camera, which can help us by protecting not only ourselves but also our house and valuables. Moreover, the use of the CCTV surveillance camera can also be use where an operator of a machine cannot directly observe people who may be injured by unexpected machine operation. For example, CCTV cameras are installed in a subway train to allow the operator to confirm that people are clears of doors before closing them and starting the train and also operators of an amusement park ride may use CCTV system to observe that starting the ride does not endanger people. CCTV camera and monitor dashboard can also make reversing a vehicle safer, if it allows the driver to observe objects or people. Cities like London uses CCTV to monitor the traffic like the London congestion charge is enforced by cameras positioned at the boundaries of and inside the congestion charge zone, which automatically read the registration plates of cars. If the drier does not pay the charge then a fine will be imposed. Similar systems are being developed as a means of locating cars reported stolen. There are news about the good of CCTV cameras recently, which states that the owner of a house was monitoring her house when she saw that two man in black entered her house and ransacked her home, as the CCTV surveillance camera was well hidden, the burglars did not took notice of it and the owner of the house, contacted the police just in time to catch the thief red-handed and thus, a crime was prevented all because of a CCTV camera and the Integrated Systems. A CCTV can not only do things like those mentioned above, it can also help with the investigation and prosecution of many murder cases and track the movements of missing children and also, apprehend bombers and terrorists. One such case was the 7 July 2005 London bombings in which a CCTV footage was used to identify the bombers. Furthermore, the technology of the CCTV camera are getting more and more advanced like the Internet Protocol Cameras (IP Cameras), which allows homeowners and businesses to view their cameras through any internet connection available through a computer or a 3G phone and also, IP cameras have Easy Connect Technology that allows a user to setup an IP camera with little or no networking experience. Therefore, the use of CCTV surveillance cameras can be good, useful and also easily used anywhere at anytime.

Disadvantages Of CCTV Surveillance

The main disadvantage of CCTV cameras is that they do not let people have much privacy. Even I, as a citizen, do not want so many CCTV cameras as "eyes" from the police or government watching me wherever I go to and keep track of the time I am in or out of my house. This will make me feel like a prisoner, who has to be monitored all the time. The massive amount of CCTV cameras around countries like New York have also made people scared of going out, such as Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the NYCLU. Another main disadvantage is the amount of electricity needed to keep the CCTV cameras up and running 24 hours a day and 7 days a week . WIth so many CCTV cameras turned n every single day, the money spent on the electricity to keep them operating will be very expensive. With the economic crisis threatening the financial stability of almost every country, this large amount of money spent may in turn cause more problems to the already disastrous financial crisis. Also another thing I want to point out is that we cannot always depend completely on CCTV cameras for surveillance and security. We sometimes also have to rely on ourselves for our own defense. For example, in MRT stations in Singapore, when one notices a suspicious person that is behaving weirdly or a bag that is left at a corner without anyone that is holding or looking after it, one should always immediately inform the staff there or call the police straight away as the bag may contain a bomb. As we all know, thieves nowadays have many ways to avoid being noticed or followed after they have committed their crimes such as stealing. This can be shown whereby thieves nowadays use gloves so as to not leave any fingerprints behind for the police to follow on their trail. Hence, they may somehow hide their bomb far from the CCTV cameras and the only way left to find these bags is by using the naked eye. Hence, CCTV cameras are only extra pairs o eyes to lock on suspicious people, not always to find suspicious items as they may be hidden by the thieves. People should also not let their guard down just because there are more CCTV cameras added.

Advantages of a CCTV

CCTV are installed or rather created in this world to take videos of any crimes/accidents as evidence.Without the CCTV installed, i think that robbers and thief would not be afraid which would increase the number of robbery and theft cases in the world. It is installed to keep the order of the public and the video taken of a robbery incident, can be a great and useful piece of evidence to prove that the robber is guilty. It works as a policeman's best friend as with it, the security would be tighter and the amount of policemen needed to patrol would be lessen.Examples of advantage of CCTV being installed, in a supermarket, if some hooligans attempt to steal some snacks from the supermarket. When he is caught doing that and if he denies that he stole the snack and maybe even threaten to sue the person who caught him red handed, they can request for the security guards to bring them to the CCTV control room and play the video footage taken and the thief would feel guilty and would be speechless. If CCTV are not installed in this world, i bet that the amount of theft and robbery cases would increase drastically and the robbers would not be afraid of their video being taken and being used as a evidence in court. The CCTV also helps to "scare" the robbers as when they see a CCTV, they may think twice before acting out the crime.(like what jinghan had said which i agreed to it) After all, I think that the world would not be able be suitable living condition if there is no CCTV installed almost everywhere as law and order would not be kept well just with policemen.CCTV also plays a very important in security and it cannot be left out.

Overview of CCTV

CCTVs are found almost everywhere in Singapore, from Large Banks to Simple Supermarkets. Most people regard CCTV as a form of security, as it surveys the area, and allows the security to have a bird's eye view of the area.

However, technology is a double edged blade, it can be abused. Some People misuse CCTVs as tools to keep track of people, often without their consent, which is plainly spying. There were even cases of security guards collaborating with criminals to pick off easy targets in Shopping Centers.

But, the CCTV is not without its good points. It can reduce the amount of manpower needed to patrol the area, by screening the entire area, and displaying them to the guard on duty.

The Tape from the CCTV can be ultilised as Evidence as well. Human witnesses may not always be 100% accurate, therefore, the information from the human witness can be compared to the tape within the CCTV and be used to judge the case.

Advantages of CCTV Surveillance BY: (Tan Jing Han) (31)

Dear All,

Firstly, I would introduce myself and I am Tan Jing Han, Index No. 31.
I would be talking about the advantages of CCTV SURVEILLANCE .

CCTVs are used all around the world to ensure that they have surveillance on what is happening around us. CCTVs are used in many places for example homes, malls, banks and many many more places to ensure the safety. When CCTVs are present, it helps to lower the crime rate as when thieves see the CCTVs they will think twice on whether they should steal or not as they know that they will be filmed. This would also ensure their behavior to be good.

The use of CCTV also helps to lower the pressure on the guards that are employed as instead of having frequent patrols, the guards can just seat in a room and monitor what is happening in the area. Therefore, the cameras can solve crimes and also prevent crimes. This ensures that Singapore would be much more safer, without them, Singapore would become a less safer place.

Signing Off,

Disadvantages of Installing CCTV Surveillance Cameras

Done by: Kelvin Eng Wei Min (09)

Looks like my cover was blown. Yep, previously, I copied and pasted, but now, I shall "write" down the disadvantages of installing CCTV Surveillance Cameras.
Firstly, if these cameras are put all over the place (streets, alleyways, walkways, etc.), people will not have sufficient privacy and it will actually be terrifying for some. Let's see, if these cameras were installed in public toilets, oh, that would certainly NOT be nice. Secondly and lastly, do these cameras improve the behaviour of schoolchildren? They will, only when they know they are being watched, and will therefore "act normally". This means that they will only behave when they are being watched and become "insane" when they aren't. So this means that the school did NOT manage to have a better environment for the kids.

Advantages of CCTV survelliance by:Keefe Neo 2i(20)

Firstly, CCTV surveillance systems consists of hardware and software components that collect and transmit the surveillance camera information via wireless technologies, fiber optic cable or over any IP-based network. Both power and data can be carried on the same cable by using PoE(power over Ethernet). Some cameras in a digital system may also have their own IP address for full access to the Internet. These surveillance images are then transferred to a PC or laptop in a centralized control room to be viewed by an observer using a compact,flat-screen monitor that offers multi-screen displays. An IP-based digital system is unlike he traditional closed CCTV system ,whose images must be monitored using multiple monitors, sites and personnel.
The uses for CCTV systems are surveillance, traffic control, theft, shoplifting, employee theft, and/or robbery deterrence, and identification.Surveillance cameras are basically used to step up security as u can infer from the previous sentence and can prevent the chances of people committing crimes without being spotted by the police department and these cameras are almost everywhere in London and Paris.Surveillance cameras have proved useful as it has shown the cut down of crimes like robbery and theft. The financial district, considered the prime target for terrorism, have been surrounded by about 505 surveillance cameras and this has also reduced the amount of crime rates.Surveillance and traffic control probably do not require color cameras; black & white may actually provide better resolution. However, theft, shoplifting and/or robbery deterrence and identification may require color cameras, if there is an arrest and prosecution a court will require color to make positive identification, on a black & white recording a red sweatshirt would appear to be grey.
Think of this from another angle, would the cost of these surveillance cameras bother you if it concerns about your safety in the outside world? The government is there trying to make the world a better and safer place for everybody to live and people are there complaining about their privacy?Money can be earned back but do you think that the lives of people and the justice of the police in crimes can be earned back? No.The police would then need to do alot of research of DNA and do alot of thinking and testing till they finally can solve the case and this will end up in using more resources and money. If they had surveillance cameras, they could just identify the suspect and ever so conveniently uphold justice and solve the whole crime.Further more, these surveillance cameras are not really hidden and is clearly identified by people by large labels and this should not make people think that the government is invading your privacy. So,in my opinion,I strongly feel that the government should continue with this and go forward in making this world a happier and safer place for all the people to live.

English Holiday Assignment

Blog Entry Disadvantages about CCT Surveilance: Basically, there are 2 main disadvantages about this CCT Surveilance, The Money cost and the privacy related to the public. The Money cost: Of course, it has many advantages having CCT cameras around the public. However, By having so many CCT cameras at such big and crowded places, it needs a lot of money. A CCT camera is not cheap. One CCT camera cost at least $170. According to the news, there is approximately 500 cameras in countries. The Public's privacy: Although the CCT cameras had helped a lot in reducing the crimes rates in some countries, the privacy of many people in the public had been threatened. There was a cop in the news that was interviewed mentioned that Since the CCT cameras are under the police forces, the privacy of the public's people would be ignored. I think that it was very unfair for the public's people as they did not even know that they were being watched and they did not even had a chance to voice out as the government and the police force did not care. I suggested this opinion of mine because I sympathized the woman getting interviewed in the public. She was so helpless, angry that what she or others said would not make sense to the government and the police force. I think the Police force or the government can try the other way helping the public with their respect and agreement. Chong Zhi Khong (6) 2I

Advantages Of Surveillance Cameras

Blog Entry - Mackenzie-Greg Tan Boon Kit

Topic: Surveillance Cameras

What are the advantages of surveillance cameras?
Basically the advantages of surveillance cameras are mainly to make sure that public order is kept and also to make sure terrorists are dealt with first-hand without letting them roam freely and try to plan their attacks. In the London bombings, surveillance cameras were used to trace where are the suspects and capture them. This proves that surveillance cameras are useful to help the people and also to help the police department in their detective jobs.  Surveillance cameras are set up on busy and industrial streets and over 505 are planted at everywhere and anywhere to be able to keep track on people and terrorists trying to disrupt local peace

Blog Entry Winhacker95-Cheung Jia Hui

First of all I want to say, IM THE FIRST TO POST.

Okay now lets get serious.

Advantages Of CCT Surveillance:

CCT Surveillance as seen in the youtube video is a effective means of deterrence against terrorism. As reported, in the London bombings, the numerous CCT cameras were used to trace the suspects involved in the bombings and nab them. CCT surveillance can also be used to track your domestic helper's actions as reported in the newspaper article. CCT surveillance is of great importance to us in the modern age as many crimes are being committed. Due to the economic downturn, a spike in crimes should be anticipated and countered by measures. CCT Surveillance is one of the ways. There is also CCT Surveillance cameras which are state-of-the-art such as those used in Chicago by the Chicago Police. There are over 2000 CCT Serveillance Cameras in Chicago and 200 belong to the police department. They can identify gunshots and turn in the direction where the shots are coming from. It can also identify the weapon that the suspect is using. This will help narrow down the possibilities of the suspects in question.
